The Friends of Northwest Park and Park Director, Ford Parker are pleased to introduce a new feature on our web site - Northwest Park - Naturally. We'll post information on interesting sightings at the park, and you can contribute!
When park staff, members, and guests spot interesting wildlife, let us know! Park staff will confirm the sighting, and, as space permits, we'll post the information (and pictures if you have them) here on the web site.

Species: Red-headed Woodpecker (immature) - Melanerpes erythrocephalus
Location of sighting: Follow the northern entrance of Brookside Trail to ;the ravine.
Sighting Date: January 27, 2010
Sighting Notes: This bird is an endangered species in Connecticut. It was observed collecting and storing acorns and feeding on cached insects.
Species: Merlin Falcon (Falco columbarius)
Location of sighting: North farm road in tree by the windmill.
Sighting Date: February 5, 2010
Sighting Notes: This small falcon was feeding on a bird.
Species: Eastern Phoebe (Sayornis phoebe)
Location of sighting: Woods behind the Organic Garden Demonstration Area.
Sighting Date: March 16, 2010
Sighting Notes: The male was calling to establish its territory.
Species: Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura)
Location of sighting: Circling above the picnic pavilion.
Sighting Date: March 20, 2010
Sighting Notes: The vulture was circling to gain altitude in the afternoon thermals.
Species: American Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)
Location of sighting: Pond off of Pond Trail

Sighting Notes: The eagle as observed circling the pond for a short time.
